Fatemeh

Salam, dear readers! I’m traveling this week, so I didn’t have time to do a lengthy link list. But here are the spoils from this week:

  • Asma Barlas shares her experiences at the Third Congress on Islamic Feminism.
  • Aaminah Hernández writes a thought-provoking post on unity in the Muslim community.
  • The U.K. gives asylum to a woman fleeing Lebanese shari’a law.
  • Marrying a seven-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy to end a feud? Bad!
  • IslamOnline reviews the harrowing story of Sameem Ali from her new memoir.
  • How did the women’s conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, go? The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette asks a man.

I loved the article by Diane Guilbault (linked under Western” feminism alienates Muslim women again) – seriously though, a QUEBECOIS arguing for the denial of cultural rights to other groups??

The story of the Somalian girl is terrible. However, I’m a bit concerned about the contradictory reports. One says she’s 23, another says she’s 13. One says she’s killed in the town square, another says a stadium. Not that these details actually change the heinous nature of the crime, but it does make me question the credibility of the sources.

    TO AG:

I worked on one of these press releases, and the unfortunate reality is that often we don’t have reliable sources for this sort of thing. Just the fact that the news got out in the first place was incredible.

We first thought she was 23 because a witness there guestimated her age. Then we found out from a researcher working for Amnesty International that she was in fact 13. Also, I’m pretty sure she was killed a town square, but you know, “stadiums” is sometimes intepreted loosly, especially when there’s a tranlation issue.

Anyway, bottom line: She was 13, we’re working to correct other reports, she was raped, tried for adultery, and stoned.

Interesting, Rochelle. Thanks for clearing matters up!
