I like this piece quite a bit--I NEVER hear about Latina Muslims, and you would think just from demographics that there must be a number of them. And I love the point about not having to have culture overwritten by another culture that happens to be associated with your religion. And I also love Melinda's point about word choice above, and Krista's reaction to it.

I would add that it might be better to use the phrase "Latino cultures," because Latino is an umbrella term, and the cultural differences among Latinos are pretty vast. (I do a lot of work in a different collection of communities that also uses an umbrella term, and the plural really makes a difference.)

@ Melinda: Good point. I wasn't paying attention. I meant "vibrant" in the sense of "thriving" and "not overshadowed by other cultural interpretations of what Islamic communities should look like," but you're right that the word probably wasn't the best one in the context of existing stereotypes about Latino culture. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's really nice to read stories about other Muslim communities that exist besides Middle Eastern/South Asian ones.

'If the journalist tries to dig a little deeper, there may be some theological reasons for choosing Islam'

This is something that really annoys me in many writings about people that embrace Islam. The writers never every seem to consider that it's anything to do with the religion itself.. it's always something socio-economic, or a boyfriend, or brainwashing, or because they want to fit in with their friends... yada yada yada

nice post

Good post! The story of the Puerto Rican woman who grew up Muslim is really interesting.

One little quibble: It's not major, but the use of "vibrant" in the last line (about Latino culture) has a hint of stereotyping/racism, if you know what I mean.

I really liked this; Sultana's descriptions of reconciling her Latina culture with her Muslim faith reminded me of a woman's blog that I read. She is Dominican-American and converted to Orthodox Judaism, and experienced many of the same things, including racism.
